Many activities were created with support in the Stargirl unit so that students are likely to have successful experiences on their own or in a small group. Each handout begins with comprehension questions to ensure students are “getting it”. Since Love, Stargirl is a letter (the “world’s longest love letter” no doubt!), we divided the unit into dates. We did not have time to read the sequel to Stargirl as a whole class, so we developed a unit that allowed us to use Love, Stargirl as an independent read in two classes and a literature circle novel in two classes. In my opinion metaphors are more effective, for when you say you "are" something it has a stronger effect than saying you're "like" something. The reader can easily grasp what the character was feeling through this descriptive metaphor. One strong metaphor in the book is when the narrator says "In school I was a yellow balloon, smiling and lazy, floating above the classrooms ()". The metaphors within it convey even intenser emotion and feeling to the reader than do similes. There are also many metaphors in Stargirl. He’s all she can think about, and her life begins to feel like a parade of unhappy anniversaries. My personal favorite simile in the book is when the narrator is describing an awkward situation and says "From the moment we arrived at school the next day, the atmosphere bristled like cactus paddles ()." The reader can really grasp that feeling of the energy at school being prickly and uncomfortable. Stargirl has moved and left everything behind: Arizona, Mica High, enchanted desert placesand Leo.
'And then there was less and less to see as the head vanished and the rest curled through the fringe of the light and followed, like the tail of a powdered-blue dragon, into the darkness. Another memorable simile is "And then the world was free to flow into me like water into an empty bowl ()." Because the author used a simile here, the reader can easily understand how the character felt. 'Hillari took off her shoe and used it like a hammer to smash the cookie on her table.' Simile. One example of a simile that fully encapsulates what the author meant is when the narrator says ".and her eyes were the biggest I had ever seen, like deer's eyes caught in the headlights ()." If this sentence had been a metaphor the portrait that the reader would've gotten would be quite different. In Stargirl there are many, many similes and metaphors that really bring life to the story and its characters.
